update of the week
hi readers
Sorry i didn't keep up with my daily update but i've been busy and i've decided to do an update at any time but there will definitely be one every week and if not i shall notify you.
So far this week i have seen the usual like blue tits, great tits, blackbirds, lesser/greater black backed gulls, mallards, coots, magpies, wood pigeons, quite a few starlings and coal tits.
I think i have seen black headed gulls but i'm not 100% sure.
Just to let you know i shall be referring to lesser and greater black backed gulls as lbb gulls and gbb gulls.
thanks for reading have a great week

apologies
hi readers, sorry i haven't been posting on this very often but i have been busy so heres an update on the past month.Firstly i have solved the mystery of the tern and have found that it had a black tip so it must be a common tern. I also took a photo of it:
The other day i also saw a wren in my garden. Its tail was cocked so i identified it easily. I have also seen an increasing number of tits in my garden. this morning i saw a few coal tits, great tits but not many blue tits. I still see a lot of house sparrows but this is normal.
One last thing, i was walking home from school the other day and saw what i thought was a pigeon, but at closer examination it was grey-brown. when i walked past i saw that it had a whitish front and black spots and immediately identified it as a mistle thrush. i know it wasn't a song thrush because a song trush is more dark brown
I shall be posting more regularly on this, hopefully once a day but if not that then definitely once every two days

common or arctic
hi readers
over the past week or so i have seen many ducks on the canal. it starts with the pintail that is still there and there is a group of female mallards (about 8) which i find strange because if they are all in a line they fit halfway across the canal. there are also a lot of chicks aswell, there are small mallard chicks and there are some large coot chicks. unfortunately i haven't seen any moorhen chicks.
other news. i saw a fox run very quickly along the canal, but i didn't get a photo which is ashame.
now relating to the title of this post. today i saw what i thought to be a gull at first but it had a different shape and flew differently this is when i thought, could this be a tern. after it had darted round above the canal it dived down and came out with a fish in its mouth. then to my amazement, it swooped round and flew past me about 2 metres away. i got a good look then. i saw an orange beak and legs and a black head but only the top was black. i heard it very distinctively and when i checked my bird book i figured that it was either common or arctic tern and when i checked my bird songs cd i found that the sound i heard sounded much like an arctic tern.
if anyone in the area of wednesfield reads this and has seen this bird please comment or just comment on any recent findings you have made.

just another update
Hi readers good news!!!
Firstly the Pintail is still here, I have been seeing him nearly everyday for the past few weeks and I am seeing a lot more Mallards which is very good. Some might say that the Mallards have returned!!
Also i am getting a lot more blue tits and great tits in my garden and the other day i saw a long tailed tit perched on a bush in my garden. i have also heard a chiff chaff from my garden and it was coming from the canal so hopefully it will visit my garden.
Another strange event after the pintail was a chaffinch in my garden, I know chaffinches are common in gardens but i haven't had one in my garden before and for the first few days of it being in my garden it was flying into the glass on my summer house but after i opened the door it must have realised that it was its reflection and it has stopped doing that now.
I don't know if anyone saw but yesterday there was an astonishing amount of gulls over the canal, black headed, lesser black backed, greater black backed and herring gull were there. i think that there could have been a couple of terns amongst them but i'm not too sure.
I also had a squirrel problem for a while but fortunately it has gone, i shall tell you why and how i got rid of it. it was in my birdtable and i went out into the garden to scare it off and i got reasonably close and when it noticed me it started spinning around in my bird table and i moved back a step and it jumped out and stumbled over my next door neighbours fence and i haven't seen it since.
I will probably give another update soon because i just saw a bird that i can't identify so i will post after i have identified it.

pintail?
i was feeding the ducks and a canada goose at the end of my garden the other day and i saw a duck which to me and my nan looked slightly like a mixed mallard but when i took some photos of it and later compared them with my bird book i thought it could be a pintail. here are the photos.

grey heron
About an hour ago there was a grey heron on a fence two doors away from me and it took off after a few minutes and flew round and landed in a tree, if it was still there now then there may have been a chance of nesting but its not unfortunately. it was amazing when it took off though.

just an update
Over the past few months i have been testing out the best places to put my bird feeders and birdboxes and i have finally found the perfect places. on my feeders i have had lots of house sparrows, some robins and blue tits and 1 or 2 great tits. i have also put some birdboxes on the canal and this morning i was watching a house sparrow venture in and have a look so i think that a pair could be nesting there. Also above the birdbox there are a pair of woodpigeons nesting and they are there everyday so i can see quite a few nesting birds there. i have also found that the amount of dunnocks in my garden is incredible and that a lot of woodpigeons, collared doves, blackbirds and dunnocks have been feeding from the seed that has dropped on the floor.
